What's scarier is the acknowledgement that crazy people elect crazy government -- that there is a huge swath of these insane gun-loving, hypocritical, self-destructive Ted Cruz-types woven throughout the American fabric. ********** [062831:101613] D.E., Chicago, IL With this unfortunately situation with the "federal government shutdown merry-go-round" (which I blame the extremist Tea Party wing of the Republican Party for), our national parks, national monuments, national historic areas, national wildlife refuges, and national forests remain CLOSED to the general public (and I am an experienced wildlife observer and an avid hiker)--also hurting the businesses in the surrounding communities. After about 25 years and five United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, there is an immediate urgency in supporting sound climate mitigation (first priority) and adaptation (second priority) strategies so that we can survive better on an increasingly hotter planet with scarcer water and food supplies. The same Tea Party Republicans who are blindly pushing our national economy into the disastrous "international default mode" by not raising the "debt ceiling" are also denying the "sound science realities" of human-caused climate disruption, and delaying any meaningful measures to deal with it (such as challenging the authority of the Executive Branch to greatly reduce our carbon emissions from polluting fossil-fuel power plants). We should be aggressively pushing technically and economically feasible non-fossil-fuel/non-nuclear energy strategies around the globe--based upon greatly increased energy efficiency (improved energy productivity), combined heat-and-power (co-generation), appropriate renewable energy technologies (using solar, wind solid biomass, liquid and gaseous biofuels, hydro, geothermal, and wave/tidal), and an updated, modernized 'smart' electricity grid with advanced energy storage. ********** [054114:101613] M.T., Sarasota, FL I would like to see a system similar to Israel's adopted -- if congress is unable to pass a budget by deadline, then 1/12th of the prior years budget is automatically put into place for each of the next 6 months. If congress still has not done their job by the end of 6 months, the government doesn't shut down -- an election is held for all congressional seats.
