It is imperative that a legal change be made to outlaw what is ultimately a threat to our democracy and, thereby, protect elections from being effectively purchased by the individual or corporation with the largest bullhorn. Brian Ruppert ********** [063739:091714] R.C., Sycamore, IL We need to retract "Citizen United" as it is clearly setting this country up to be an Oligarchy. We cannot have corporations buying our elections period. ********** [212722:091614] J.M., Alachua, FL A kids we never wanted the lid put back on the cookie jar when our hands were in it. We're watching who votes against this measure. ********** [191731:091614] P.S., Spencer, OH It is critical to our democratic republic that the Citizen's United decision is overturned by way of a Constitutional amendment. Addtionally to recognize that Citizen's United violates the Fourteenth Amendment of the US Constitution, citing unequal protection of the law. People can be jailed for conduct. Corporations can't. No vote for Corporations. ********** [175158:091614] C.F., Clearfield, UT The government should be run by the people, not by corporations, corrupt government employees or right-wing judges. Please preserve our freedom and amend the Constitution to repudiate corporate personhood and money as speech! ********** [085943:091614] R.C., Binghamton, NY REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A PARTISAN ISSUE. ********** [030337:091614] L.F., Buckeye, AZ I have a better idea. Instead of altering the Constitution, which is a *very* risky business and which the citizenry is very cautious about, let's use "corporate personhood" against the corporations themselves. Thin: if a corporation is a "person", then it's subject to the same laws as any other person. If a corporation causes the deaths of several people, then it (at least its "brain" -- its Board of Directors) can be arrested, tried, jailed, and *even executed* just like any other person. Execute a few corporations, and the rest of them will do their damnedest to make the Supreme Court change its mind. ********** [000706:091614] K.I., Oakland, CA We need corporations to pay their fair share. ********** [213527:091514] p.p., Nashville, TN It's time for the currant Republican party to stop acting stupid and contemptuous about the changes to citizens united being made a part of the Constitution as an amendment. The Supreme Court has corrupted the financing process so much that now some republicans are questioning how far you go with lying and misrepresenting their Democratic opponent. It's just plain wrong to buy advertising that they know is unfair and untrue about their opponent. It cheapens the Democratic process. This seems par for the course for the current Republican party to cheapen the process and shift the balance so their narrow and unsustainable ideas can become law. I want to know where the real republican party is and when they are going to finally stand up for what's right? I'd love to see some of them tell their representatives it's wrong to lie and deceive. To tell them to stop being so corrupt. And finally to stop thinking it's okay to be so corrupt. ********** [211641:091514] S.B., Sebastopol, CA Our Founding Fathers never intended to have so few wield such enormous power of influence (namely unlimited money) to affect our political system. Do we essentially want only billionaires and multi-millionaires anointing all and making all decisions in this country! Get rid of The Mockery Of Our Democracy- Citizen's United! ********** [204105:091514] D.S., Deming, WA Citizens United is utterly blasphemous to democracy. It is as oligarchical as it can get and still pretend to represent the interests of the people and the common good of the majority. It is an outright fraud to our nation. ********** [203858:091514] D.S., Lenoir City, TN It is no longer appropriate for our government to be bought, paid for and beholden to just a few wealthy individuals. It should still be a government OF THE PEOPLE (ALL THE PEOPLE). ********** [201904:091514] M.B., Manchester Township, NJ When is the GOP going to wake up to what the people of this country want .The only thing they want to represent is big money that lines there pockets and they do there bidding.I am disgusted with the whole system. ********** [190647:091514] M.R., Bennettsville, SC The Constitution has constructively already been amended . . . by over a century of conniving by corporate attorneys, corrupt clerks, and agenda driven right wing judges. The net result we have now does not even resemble the vision of the Founding Fathers of "We, The People." What is required now is to affirmatively amend it back to what was intended, to what President Lincoln, himself a Republican, spoke of, a government "of, by and for the People," not one entirely dominated by narrow, big money, special interests. S.J.Res.19 and H.J.Res.119 are a good start, and would at least give back to Congress the power stolen by the Supreme Court by judicial fiat, to make reasonable regulations on the spending of money to influence elections. We call on all members of Congress not completely corrupted by such money to support these proposed constitutional amendments at a minimum, as we continue to work for full repudiation of corporate personhood as well. This is not a partisan issue. But any and all who oppose can and must be replaced. ********** [162426:091514] M.U., Berlin, WI Ron Johnson voted against our interest when he chose to voted to keep the "corporations are people" wording in our constitution. How could they be, they don't even have to pay taxes like we do. Hope all will vote him out! ********** [144448:091514] P.I., Nashville, TN Before the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court, Congress had the power to set limits on campaign spending, and prohibit corporate and union spending during the political process. The "Democracy for All Amendment" would restore that power to Congress. Then the U. S. Congress can decide whether or not a corporation or union is a living and breathing citizen of our nation. This amendment deserves the support of our representatives regardless of party affiliation. ********** [134959:091514] H.W., Durham, NC The two recent SCOTUS decisions - Citizens United and McCutcheon are a dagger to the heart our democracy, converting it into an amoral corporate puppet devoid of human values and devoted solely to the pursuit of profit WHATEVER THAT MAY TAKE including destruction of the entire biosphere. ********** [132756:091514] P.G., Vienna, ME Philip Gregory ********** [122710:091514] P.W., Chicago, IL I can't support SJR 19 in its current form and HJR 119 is not much better, they are both too weak and full of holes. Here are points I feel must be in the amendment: 1) Corporations are not people and are not entitled to the rights of natural persons 2) Money is not equivalent to free speech 3) Public officials and candidates for office may not accept anything of value from any organization or non-citizen other than their salary and legitimate expenses from the government 4) Lobbying must be directed at the electorate - not public officials 5) Individual campaign contributions must be tightly capped (I suggest indexed to the federal minimum wage) These will not only dramatically reduce the corrupting influence of big money, but will equally importantly allow our elected officials to spend their time in service rather than raising money. ********** [121136:091514] A.D., Redwood City, CA The Democrats watered down this amendment, we need to clearly state, corporations aren't people. A person, lives breathes, dies, and votes, a living being, not a contrived corporate entity created by the state. ********** [121037:091514] C.N., Los Gatos, CA The U.S. Constitutions reads "We The People_", NOT we the wealthy or we the corporations. A majority of citizens in this country want these resolutions passed. I'm tired of being taxed without representation! ********** [112939:091514] C.F., Black Canyon City, AZ Please stand up with integrity and renounce Citizens United as being a further step to erosion of our Democracy...We, The People are speaking. As our Representatives, listen! Thank you. ********** [111514:091514] D.T., Port Townsend, WA Money is power and can corrupt the political process. Unlimited money definitely corrupts the political process and is not "speech". Donations to politicians -- directly or indirectly -- must be significantly restricted and regulated. ********** [103930:091514] B.M., Memphis, TN I want to see the actual literature on this, I want it to be gone over point by point and explained how it works now, how the proposed amendment changes it, and all of it's effects. So many groups are saying things about it , but I need to see it firsthand to know what is really going in the books. The current system is wrong and something does need done about it. Let's make sure we do not give up any freedoms ,perhaps there is something already in the constitution about this sort of funding? Clearly it is wrong for political seats to be able to be bought by who can spend more on adds. Maybe it is the country as a whole that is at fault for being able to be swayed so easily by advertisements? Shouldn't we all demand to see facts, voting records and actions, rather than wholeheartedly follow some campaign adds made to target emotions rather than really saying anything? Now it is to the point where facts can't even be gotten, and if you want to know any , you have to watch some long boring news show with people bickering and slandering rather than getting at understandable and knowledgeable facts. Even then people don't get a full story of events and processes for most stuff. Even if people wanted to, most don't have time to participate in our politics. It does seem to be a social divide, is that on purpose? ********** Go Back |
